If you read here much, you already know that I’m not the queen of crafting. I try, I really do. Sometimes, I get it right.
I found a make your own journal video and could not resist giving this project a try. I love journals. Pretty journals in leather, fabric, sparkly or not, I love them.
And so do my girls.
This project has a wonderful dual purpose as a homeschool project. I approached it as something fun to make and as we were working on it, my little women started discussing what they would write on the pages of their special book. They had plenty of ideas – poetry, daily journaling, creative writing, sketching, etc.
There’s a lesson in upcycling here too. I went into the (always present) give away pile in a corner of my dinning room and found a bunch of fabrics that would work nicely. Add a little stuffing, a few marble composition books and some ribbon and you are all set to get started.
Here’s the video inspriation. We didn’t follow the instructions exactly, as my girls often need to add their own special touch to their work, but the journals still turned out lovely.
Get creative and let the kids design the look for their journal. Use scrapbook embellishments to create a unique or personalized look.
Next time, I’m making one for myself. Denim or leather? Not sure. I would recommend this project for ages 6 and up. Let them use the glue gun themselves! They will love it. Have them wear stretchy / knit gloves to protect their hands from burns.
