Hackschooling for Happiness

I’m fascinated by the extraordinary capabilities hidden within the teen population. The following video from Tedx University of Nevada is a beautiful example of how a thirteen year-old can learn AND live their dreams right now.

Meet Logan LaPlante. He describes himself as a  “curious and creative wingnut.” He’s been hacking his own education since he was nine. His main goals in life are simple: to be happy and healthy.

Crap. He’s impressive. We use a hodge-podge of different schooling. Text books to unschooling, depending on the subject. I’m just not brave enough to go full out unschooling. Thanks for sharing this!

I love this kid!!! I hope my son is like him when he’s 13! What a smart, well spoken adorable kid!

So impressive and seriously could only hope that my girls are as smart and well rounded as him someday. Thanks Amy for sharing!!

I’m not brave enough yet either! We are trying to find a balance that makes everyone around here happy, which is difficult. I definitely do try to give them the freedom they need to pursue things when they are interested. But we use a mix of stuff too- each kid is different. :)

Wow. That little dude is awesome! I need to look more into this Ted stuff. I feel like, in some ways, I’m the 33 year old version of that kid: I quit my job to be creative. Holy crap! LOL

  • Stacy Harris

That kid is wise beyond his years!

  • Emily

Wow, very interesting and yet another aspect of non-traditional schooling that I’ve learned about. That kid is a better speaker than most adults (including myself)!

Extremely interesting concepts! Glad you shared these. Btw, every time I try to follow by email, I get a blank page. Just thought I’d let you know! Great job!

Thanks Richard! I have been trying for ages to get my email subscriptions to work and I just can’t seem to get it right! I will keep trying and let you know when I get it set up right.

I know! I didn’t start taking charge of my life like that until my mid 20′s. I just went along with the expectations. And you should definitely check out the Ted Talks. I’m kind of addicted and have been wanting to do a blog series about them.

I’m so glad you published this! This is so inspiring!! It’s made me realize that I’m on the right path, but that I need to concentrate more on a few things he’s mentioned. All of this from a 13-year-old. Just what I needed to watch first thing in the morning. Thanks Amy! :)
