Our Kids Deserve Better

We all do.

bullied

No one deserves to have their self-esteem battered daily. No one deserves to be called names or fear going to school each morning.

I came across this incredible video today and I knew that I had to share it here. Please take the time to watch this powerful animation, narrated in spoken word poetry by Shane Koyczan.

Have your kids been hurt by bullying? If so, what did you do to help?

My story is here. In that post,  I wrote the following:

I often hear people comment that everyone has to go through the horrors of middle school. It’s a part of growing up. It makes a person stronger.

I do not agree that being bullied or harassed is anything but harmful to the  development of any child. I don’t believe claiming that it makes them stronger makes it okay.  I don’t believe that subjecting a child to anything with the excuse that I survived it, so can they is valid.  Why would we want to pass that pain on to the next generation?

That said again thank you so much for sharing this here today, as well as your family’s story!!

Amen! I’ve heard the same thing, and one of my biggest pet peeves is how coaches bully kids. Can’t stand it!

Wow. I watched that video and re-lived middle school…the spit wads and names and hate notes…sigh…trauma. Never want to re-live those years. :

I was bullied when I was in middle school. It doesn’t make you stronger… it makes you aggressive and sad. I fear for the times I have to deal with my kids being bullied. It isn’t right.

This just killed me Amy. It makes me SO MAD that bullying is accepted as “just what kids do”. Keilee has never been bullied but of course she is homeschooled. What is it going to take to change the world?

I can’t open the video image…having a problem with videos again, but judging from the comments it was quite powerful. Bullying is not a joke or something to just be laughed off or ignored. It happened years ago, and is getting worse today with technology. It’s scary. I’m glad you’re spreading awareness about it, it’s something that should be spoken about every day over and over.

So visual and wonderfully said! I am a teacher – and will be sharing this with all of my colleagues as it is very soon our National Day against Bullying (which admittedly is a little contrived – one day for a problem that’s so endemic across settings isn’t going to change much)! Thanks so much for sharing
