Making a simple ribbon-tied story book out of photos is fun project to work on side-by-side with your little one. This project is geared towards 4-6 year-old children and it will help them practice their story telling skills. Hand them a camera and let them take the photos themselves or create a story out of pictures from a trip, event or day they remember fondly.
Bringing home a new kitten was the topic for our story:
Supplies needed to make a mini-photo storybook:
- Camera (you will need 6-10 small photos)
- Printer
- 10 Medium sized index cards
- Crayons, markers or paint to decorate book.
- Ribbon in color of choice (about 18 inches)
- Glue
Additional / optional supplies: Use card stock, scrapbooking embellishments and stickers to make this project even more detailed. We tried to keep it simple, so that a young child could complete this project easily.
Getting Started:
- Take photos and print them out. If you are using 3×5 index cards, print out wallet size photos in order to leave room to write your story.
- Lay the ribbon out flat. Glue the ribbon down the center of an index card on the lined side. Leave 2-3 inches of ribbon loose above the card. Glue the next card lined side down on top of it. This is your cover page.
- Continue to create pages this way. Our book has five pages. Be sure to leave lots of extra ribbon at the end, to be wrapped around the finished book.
- Creating the cover page.
- Glue the index cards together to form a page.
- The book, ready for photos!
- Have your child lay out the photos in the right sequence for the story. Choose a cover photo for your book.
- Begin gluing down the photos, on every page or every other page, leaving space to write the story.
- Using a marker or crayon, have your child write their story or have them narrate while you write it for them.
- Have them decorate the pages, frame the photos with color or draw additional pictures to go with the story.
- Fold up the cards like an accordion.
- Wrap the remaining long piece f ribbon around the book and tie it in a bow.
Open it up again and read it together!
- The first page and photo.
- The cover photo.
- Photo pages.
- The finished book.
