For a beginning reader and speller, the English language presents dozens of reasons for questions. If you have a young reader that is constantly asking why, and are tired of giving the standard answer that this is an exception to the rule or English is weird, then it might be time to try out Logic of English. Over the past several weeks my 9 year-old daughter and I have been working through Essentials 2nd Edition from Logic of English.
Logic of English is a complete language arts curriculum, covering reading, phonics, spelling, vocabulary and grammar. It utilizes a clear, multi-sensory and logical approach to build strong readers and spellers. The curriculum is comprehensive in it’s instruction and helps you fill in any learning gaps and while building and expanding on your students existing skills.
What is Covered in Logic of English?
It is a full language arts program that comes with everything you need to effectively teach reading, vocabulary, spelling and grammar in your homeschool. The Essentials program covers three levels – and could be used for three years / grades of instruction. Due to this design, a teacher can easily instruct multiple students on different levels at the same time. This program is designed for grades 2nd and up, and can aid older students and struggling readers expand their skills. Full, in depth assessments are included in the teachers manual, which can help you pin point your child’s strengths and weaknesses so you can better address their needs.
It goes in depth explaining the why behind English language and rules. So, if you have a child who is always asking questions like “why does ph make the f sound?” It will all finally make sense!
How We Used Logic of English in our Homeschool
After completing the assessments, we decided to begin with Level A. If your student is not quite ready for Level A, there are ample pre-lessons that can prepare them. Basically, the core lesson is the same for all three levels, yet as you progress through the lesson, assignments for each level will differ. The program encourages teachers and students to keep moving through the program, and not to worry about getting every single concept mastered, because it will be reviewed again when you move up to to the next level. The accompanying workbook works the same way. Pages for all three levels are contained within the one book, and the student completes only the pages for their level.
My daughter enjoys her lessons (especially the games!). We typically spend 45 minutes to one hour, four days a week with this program. Some days are shorter, of course, if the lesson covers a concept she already knows. We plan to continue using Logic of English because it is an excellent match for her learning styles and she is progressing consistently (and happily) with her skills.

The Rhythm of Handwriting – A Word About Cursive
Although Logic of English’s recommended handwriting curriculum The Rhythm of Handwriting – Cursive was not included with my review materials, I choose to purchase it immediately. After reading about their theory and recommendations (they suggest beginning with cursive, for a variety of reasons), and having the opportunity to familiarize myself with the Essentials 2nd Edition materials, I knew this would also be a good fit for my daughter. She has struggled with handwriting, particularly with speed and ease. I was hesitant about getting her started with cursive, but it is actually much easier for her. All I can say is…I wish I knew this earlier! This program is clear, and simple, but more than just a workbook to slog through. My daughter loves it.
