Over the years we’ve explored most of the trails in and around Newport, RI. Somehow, we missed Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, just past our favorite beach in Middletown.

Exploring the pebble beach.
It’s windy out there, at the end of the island, but it’s a beautiful sanctuary for birds (and the people who visit).

Making their way to the water’s edge.
There are a several options for a nature walk or hike through the area. Some paths with take along the water’s edge the entire time, while others will take you through the fields, filled with wild flowers, butterflies and birds. On this day, we chose a combination of both.
My photos from this day leave a lot to be desired, but I hope they captured even a fraction of the beauty of this place.
If you’re traveling with kids to the Newport area and would like an alternative to the popular (and often crowded) cliff walk, this is a terrific option. Young kids could definitely manage these paths safely.
